The Cool Edit | Featuring Joann White

Welcome back to The Cool Edit: Style Stories from l.a.cool’s VIPs, our series that spotlights the brilliant, stylish, fascinating women who make up the l.a.cool community. Our VIPs are more than just well-dressed, they are women navigating real life with exceptional taste. This series is giving you a glimpse into their lives, wardrobes, and what keeps them coming back to l.a.cool. This is where real style meets real life.

Meet Joann — fifth-generation farmer, mother of two, and the only woman we know wearing full Tibi in a tractor. Born and raised in Williamsburg, Michigan, Joann lives in the same farmhouse she grew up in (currently undergoing a beautiful renovation, with sneak peeks we were lucky to see) — the very one her father was born in, and where her great-great-grandfather started the family farm over a century ago. Today, she runs Interwater Farms, overseeing 500 acres of cherries, peaches, and apples.

Joann’s days follow the rhythm of the seasons, the quiet hush of winter, the excitement of spring blooms, and the first ripe cherries of summer. “I love watching everything come alive again,” she says. From winter to spring to summer — it’s like a rebirth. It’s a lot like fashion, each season brings fresh ideas, colors, and ways to experiment. This summer, that feeling of anticipation came with a big milestone: earning USDA Organic certification for the farm’s peaches and apples. “It was huge, and I’m really excited and proud of it” she says. The certification opened doors and connected her with new people and restaurants. It also made Interwater Farms one of the few certified organic fruit producers in Northern Michigan for fresh-eating apples and peaches.

While most people might picture farm life as all work boots and Carhartt, Joann’s version looks a little different...Her go-to brand? Tibi. “If someone had to pack a bag for me, I’d tell them to grab the Tibi,” she says. “You can dress it up, dress it down, and it always works.” She even took scissors to a white pair of Tibi jeans, turning them into the most effortlessly chic long shorts. “Everyone thought I was crazy,” she laughs, “but they turned out amazing.”

Her approach to style mirrors how she runs her farm — hands-on, curious, and unafraid to experiment. She encourages others to try new things, whether it’s wearing a sweater in an unexpected way, or taking a creative approach to layering and accessorizing.

BTO (BEHIND THE ORCHARD)
Who doesn’t love a Honeycrisp apple? While strolling through the orchards, Joann shared that these gems are surprisingly delicate and labor-intensive to harvest. Unlike Gala or McIntosh apples, which are picked quickly, Honeycrisp and Sweet Tango apples get the VIP treatment. Each fruit is carefully clipped at the stem, inspected for flaws, and gently placed into boxes. They’re sensitive, and every step matters to deliver that crisp, perfect bite. So next time you enjoy a Honeycrisp, remember, it was handled with love and care all the way to you!

This is Joann’s world — hardworking, confident, and endlessly creative, where fashion meets life on the farm and beyond, and we’re honored to share a glimpse into it.
